Fitness for Focused Heeling

Focused heeling can be especially hard on a dog’s body, they have to move in a very precise and flashy motion engaging and putting a strain on lots of muscles. In this course we will focus on functional canine fitness exercises that you can do with your dog to not only help improve their form, but also to help prevent injury as well. We will focus on how to build carpal strength, hind end awareness and strength, core strength/balance, neck flexibility, and much more. No experience is necessary, dogs of all ages welcome. We will cover warm ups and cool downs for heeling routines, exercise progressions, as well as two fitness circuits!

Equipment needed for class:
- at least one balance pad (could substitute a couch cushion, sit box/platform, or similar)
- a platform that is at least shoulder height (will vary for size of dog but could use a klimb, ottoman, file box, etc). will want a no slip surface on top if it doesn't have one (yoga mats are our friends!). Eventually could transfer to peanut.
- 2 rubber feed bowls
- any additional equipment is great but not required!

Enrollment open now until 07/01. Once enrollment closes all online class materials will be posted. You will have unlimited access to these materials. Video feedback on exercises will be open until 09/01.

April Pelletier

My name is April and I am a Certified Veterinary Technologist, Certified Canine Fitness Trainer, and a FitPAWS Master Trainer! I got introduced to the canine fitness world in 2013 when I first started working at a physical rehabilitation center for dogs. I had just began to compete with my dog in several sports and saw the value and the need to canine fitness and conditioning. Most people discover the fitness world once their dog is injured and in rehab. It is my goal to help spread knowledge of canine fitness for dogs (especially athletes) before they get injured!

I currently have five dogs who are my loyal and underpaid exercise testers! Sarafina is an Australian shepherd/border collie mix, Aviva, Soba, and Meira are Belgian malinois, and Soren is a Dutch Shepherd/Whippet mix. I compete and train in a variety of sports with them including flyball, dock diving, disc, ring sport, and a lot more!
